Love Riot @ Space

Friday the 29th January sees Love Riot hit Penzance at a new venue for us Space Gallery.  As if Ry Spenceley and Sir Vinyl of The Fattest wasn’t enough we are very lucky to be hosting Manchester Music men The Mutineers, we caught up with Bassist Iwan Gronow and the smart tongue of Vocalist and wordsmith Nicholas James Mallins for a quick chat.
 __

So Iwan, how was 2009 for you and the band?
Really good, we got ourselves some new management and are now under a company called Supervision who have The Mama Group behind them and look after the likes of The Cribs, Kaiser Chiefs, White Lies and now the Mutineers! (Mama Group run Glastonbury and Reading Festivals amongst other stuff - Ed)  We supported Bad Lieutenant who were formed by the members of New Order at the Ritz in Manchester to about 1400 people.

Sounds hectic, what does 2010 have in store for you?
We are really keen to get a single out towards the end of the summer independently with the help of Supervision.  Follow up on some interest from some labels and get our album out.

How would you describe the sound of the Mutineers?
We’ve been together for 2 years now and are really really tight outfit using really classic quality song writing.  It’s a song based band, and with Nick and his unique vocals up front.  I guess if you had to compare us to someone you could maybe go for Echo And The Bunnymen, Crosby Stills and Nash but with a Mutineers twist!

Are you looking forward to the gig at Love Riot?
Yeah can’t wait, I love coming to Cornwall and its Mike (our guitarists) first time to Cornwall so I’m really looking forward to showing him some true Cornish action! (laughs)

Reckon he could be into wearing a dress and necking lambrini?
Mike? Yeah I reckon we could get him in to some of that, Mike’s game for anything (laughs again!)  He’ll fit in nicely!

What are the your fellow band mates like?
Hahahaa they are top blokes all of them.  Jack the drummer is a bit of a moaner, but I think that’s a Northern thing as it rubs off on me and I can end up moaning too!Like I said Mike is game for pretty much anything, we have somehow given Nick the nickname Lurcher, which came about from a mental trip Peckham that was well rough.  We stayed at this place which was £5/£10 per night and got up one morning to find our van tyres slashed.  And we were these 4 skinny, Manchester musicians hanging around this rough area of Peckham standing out like a sore thumb!  But we came away from the trip with a some top sounding tracks so it wasn’t all bad.

You’re known for having some of the best dancing legs in the music industry any chance of seeing them on the 29th?!
Oh there’s a very strong chance if I get enough booze in me.

Next up was Nick, who after a brief chat over our festive celebrations gave me a brief overview of the band members…
Iwan is a GothMike is a poptart he’s the pretty one of the groupJack is a ginger mulletted fool… and I mean that with affection! And I’m the brains of the operation!!

Brilliant sounds like a right dangerous group of fellas, you looking forward to playing in Cornwall!?
Yeah Mad Keen for it, everyone has a mad mentality there, always up for a laugh, which I think, is the coolest thing!  I actually think of myself as half Cornish, I think the mayhem appeals to my anarchic side!

How is 2010 going to look for the Mutineers?
Well we are going to release a single, and either split up and shoot ourselves or be massive, hopefully someone will love us.  I think it’s the hardest time to be in a band, it’s not easy to become millionaires and be doing coke off hooker’s tits.

You’ve got quite a following within the surfing community from being featured on Powers of Three the Relentless film featuring our very own Cornish maniacs Mickey Smith and Tom Lowe and Irish nut job Fergal Smith.
Yeah that was cool, Mickey is really good like that, he used Hard Road we were getting messages from 12-year-old kids in Australia, which was weird. Iwan:  It was featured on Surfline and got loads of hits from around the world, which was amazing and great for the band.

I hear you have a nickname?  Care to explain?
Haha yeah my nickname is Lurcher, we were all up in Peckham staying at this hell-hole of a place called the Peckham Lodge, and we were all sharing this room.  All the boys were on it all weekend getting boozed up, whilst I was keeping it cool.  Then on the last night they’d all burned out and I was super keen and did 2 bottles of red wine in about 20mins and was smashed.  I spent the rest of the night putting my ass in Jacks face, and he said it resembles a lurcher for some reason.  And it has kinda stuck (laughs)

How would you describe the sound of The Mutineers?
Well we tend to lean towards the 80’s bands like the Cure, Aztec Camera, but with a dance edge.  Really Melodic, with an emphasis on quality song writing.  There are few 80’s sounding bands but they have an electro edge, where as we do widescreen pop song writing. __The Mutineers play Love Riot on Friday the 29th January at Space Gallery in Penzance.  You can get a taster of their frankly bloody amazing musical prowess over at www.myspace.com/mutineersofficialLove Riot @ Space
